In a move widely welcomed across the nation, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa (rtd) officially assumed office yesterday, vowing to bring strategic reforms, improve troop welfare, and eliminate corruption, indiscipline, and indolence within the ministry.
A Vision for Strategic Defence Reform
General Musa wasted no time outlining his agenda, pledging a rigorous review of all theatre commands and inter-service operations. He emphasized that his doors would remain open for frank discussions on equipment, training, welfare, and strategy, with the ultimate goal of achieving seamless operational efficiency.
“We will begin with a thorough review of all theatre commands and inter-service operations. My doors will remain open for frank discussions on equipment, training, welfare, and strategy. Our aim is seamless work,” Musa declared.
Troop Welfare as a Strategic Priority
The new minister stressed that troop welfare is not just administrative,it is strategic. He underscored the importance of morale as a force multiplier, promising timely provision of kits, operational allowances, medical care, and support for injured personnel and families of the fallen.
“Our personnel must receive their kits on time. Their operational allowances must be paid promptly. Accommodation, medical care, and support for injured personnel and families of the fallen must be priorities. Those on the frontlines watch how we treat their colleagues. If they feel abandoned, they cannot give their best,” he said.
Leveraging Technology and Intelligence
General Musa highlighted the critical role of technology, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance in modern defence. He called for data-driven decisions, strengthened partnerships with allies, and a high standard of professionalism and integrity.
“Data,not conjecture, must guide our decisions. We do not have time to waste. We must respect human rights, avoid mistakes where possible, and when they occur, correct them decisively,” he noted.
Zero Tolerance for Corruption and Indiscipline
A recurring theme of his address was zero tolerance for corruption, indiscipline, or indolence. General Musa reaffirmed that while candid advice and robust debate would be welcomed, once a decision is made, the ministry must act as one team.
“There will be zero tolerance for corruption, indiscipline, or indolence. Our focus must be results-driven, and loyalty to Nigeria and the Nigerian people remains paramount,” he emphasized.
A Call for Comprehensive Solutions to National Security Challenges
Reaffirming his commitment to both the president and the nation, General Musa stressed a balanced approach to tackling insecurity. He spoke of the need for both kinetic and non-kinetic solutions, including justice, equity, fairness, and good governance.
“The shedding of innocent blood must end. Our children deserve to return to school, and farmers must return to their farms. Many of these issues require both kinetic and non-kinetic solutions,” he said.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, pledged unity among the armed services and full support for the minister’s initiatives. He highlighted General Musa’s experience and familiarity with the ministry as a key advantage in coordinating a robust response to the nation’s security challenges.
“The minister is not new to this ministry. We are glad to have him back and look forward to a more coordinated approach to solving our security challenges. Collectively, we will support this cause and strengthen the confidence of Nigerians in our armed forces,” General Oluyede said.
