benin-coup
An attempted coup reportedly unfolded in the early hours of Sunday in Benin, with sources saying the incident began with an attack on President Patrice Talon’s residence in the capital, Porto Novo. According to early accounts, soldiers led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri seized control of the national television station shortly afterward and announced that President Talon had been “removed from office” along with all state institutions.
The group behind the attempted takeover is calling itself the Military Committee for Refoundation. Their broadcast declared the dissolution of the existing government structure, although details about their broader intentions remain unclear. The sudden and coordinated actions have raised concerns about political stability in the West African nation.
President Patrice Talon, who has been in power since 2016, was expected to step down next April following the country’s upcoming presidential election. However, his whereabouts are currently unknown after the attack on his residence. The uncertainty has intensified anxiety in the capital and across the nation.
The French Embassy in Benin posted an alert urging French citizens to remain indoors, citing reports of “gunfire at Camp Guezo,” a military site located near the president’s official residence. Residents in the area have also reported hearing heavy gunfire throughout the morning.
As security forces and military units position themselves across key parts of Porto Novo, the situation remains fluid and highly unpredictable. Communications from official government channels have gone silent, and independent verification of events has been difficult due to restricted access.
More information is expected as the situation continues to develop.
